Conor McGregor accepts UFC offer to fight Dustin Poirier, but won’t wait

Dustin Poirier and Conor McGregor UFC 178
Conor McGregor tweeted Thursday that he accepted the UFC's offer to fight Dustin Poirier in the octagon ... with one caveat. The fight must take place in 2020.
McGregor started the year with a stunning finish from Donald "Cowboy" Cerrone at the UFC 246 Main Event in January. He had planned to fight at least three to four times in his 2020 season. That didn't happen.
The Irish toasted against dates and opponents with the UFC. Then the world almost came to a standstill because of the coronavirus pandemic. McGregor's frustration led him to announce his retirement from the fight in June.
It was only recently that McGregor began to say that he would fight again. At first it was a boxing match with Manny Pacquiao. Then it was a fighting exhibition with Poirier to raise money for charity. McGregor pledged a $ 500,000 donation to Poirier's The Good Fight Foundation as part of the deal.
After McGregor and Poirier apparently agreed on the show fight, UFC President Dana White made the two an offer to meet at the Octagon instead.
Poirier quickly accepted the UFC's offer.
At the time of bidding, White was aiming for a date in January or February 2021.
That won't fly with McGregor who said he would fight Poirier, only if the fight happened in 2020. He promised to make the donation to Poirier's charitable foundation still good.
"Hi Dustin! I accepted the UFC offer to fight you but told them it had to happen in 2020. I'm ready for November 21st given the recent injury issues on this card as well as one of the December dates, December 12th and 12th I will continue to donate the $ 500,000 to the Good Fight Foundation. "

UFC 255 and UFC 256 main events split apart
For his part, Poirier told ESPN that he was ready to fight McGregor on November 21 at UFC 255 or on December 12 at UFC 256. The main events of both battle cards have recently been blown apart.
UFC bantamweight champion Deiveson Figueiredo was due to defend against Cody Garbrandt in the UFC 255 main event, but his opponent was out due to injury. Garbrandt has now been replaced by Alex Perez, but this fight certainly doesn't have the appeal of a fight between Figueiredo and Garbrandt.
UFC 255 also features Valentina Shevchenko bringing her flyweight title on the line over Jennifer Maia.
UFC 256 was originally supposed to feature Kamaru Usman finally getting his welterweight belt on the line against Gilbert Burns. But that fight was also pushed back when it was discovered that it took Usman more time to be ready.
Two-time champion Amanda Nunes is set to defend her featherweight belt at UFC 256 against Megan Anderson.
Poirier sounded optimistic that he and McGregor would start the fight.
