The rivalry between Nurmagomedov and McGregor dates back to the build-up of their UFC 229 lightweight title fight in October 2018, which "The Eagle" won by submitting in the fourth round. It is one of the most personal feuds in martial arts history.
Nurmagomedov retired undefeated in October 2020 after defending his title against Justin Gaethje. Although Nurmagomedov was arguably the best fighter in the world and one of the biggest names in martial arts, he left the sport after promising his mother not to continue his fighting career without his father by his side.
McGregor last fought in July and suffered a TKO loss to Dustin Poirier, thereby losing the trilogy between the two. McGregor is currently recovering from a broken leg injury in combat that resulted in the TKO being abandoned after the first round.
