Police have arrested a man for the murder of a young mother who was shot in the head this week in New York City while walking her 3-month-old baby in a stroller.
A senior police official confirmed the arrest to The Daily Beast and identified the suspect as the baby's father. Police have not officially released the name of the man arrested by United States Marshals and the New York Police Department Fugitive Task Force.
The arrest comes two days after the brutal killing of 20-year-old Azsia Johnson sent shockwaves through the city. The young mother, an aspiring nurse, was killed near the corner of Lexington Ave. and 95th Street were shot in the head by an assailant seen on surveillance footage wearing a black hoodie and sweatpants. He approached her from behind before firing the fatal shot.
The officer said Johnson was preparing to meet with the baby's father that evening and texted a relative shortly before she died to say she could already see him in the area.
"He's here. I see him. He's wearing all black," the officer said, she wrote.
She was shot dead moments later, and her attacker began removing his outer clothing as he fled the scene, according to the officer. Police later recovered some of the items and arrested him in Brooklyn.
Johnson's family said she filed several domestic violence complaints in the months leading up to her death, but no arrests were ever made. Law enforcement sources confirmed that she had filed multiple complaints about more than one alleged perpetrator.
The senior official, who spoke to The Daily Beast, said Johnson's alleged killer had previously been on law enforcement's radar after an incident on New Year's Day in which he allegedly threw her against a wall. By the time officers arrived, he was gone, but the officer said the man had been issued an assault card, meaning he should be questioned about the alleged assault. In this case, he had still not been arrested at the time of the shooting.
“We called the Domestic Violence Unit every day. You know what they told me, it's not harassment if he makes a threat," Johnson's mother, Lisa Desort, said Thursday night at a vigil for the murdered young mother.
"Now my daughter is dead. She is dead!" She cried.
Investigators had reportedly located one of Johnson's ex-girlfriends shortly after her murder, with law enforcement sources telling the New York Post they were treating the murder as a "domestic" incident.
"She was targeted. It was a point-blank headshot and there were powder burns," a source was quoted as saying.
Addressing the man she believed was responsible for her daughter's murder in comments to NBC New York, Johnson's mother said: "I treated you like a son. I welcomed you into my house. I spoke to you and calmed you down when you were upset. I ate you. Your little girl has no father or mother and will never have one again.
Johnson leaves behind the 3-month-old she was with at the time of her murder, along with a 1-year-old.
