Correctional officer pressured female inmates into sexual activity, Mississippi cops say
A Mississippi correctional officer accused of engaging in sexual activities with inmates is now being prosecuted.
The Forrest County Sheriff's Office said Richard Williams used his "position of power and control" to have sex with female inmates under his supervision.
Williams, 33, was arrested Tuesday for four cases of illegal sexual activity with a perpetrator and one case of attempted sexual violence after investigators spoke to victims and witnesses and reviewed the surveillance video, the sheriff's office said in a press release posted online .
Authorities also checked evidence with prosecutors before bringing charges.
"These actions are unacceptable to any employee of the Forrest County Sheriff's Office. A full investigation has been initiated to determine the extent of Williams's action and what action the correctional facility can take to prevent future crimes of this nature," said the sheriff's officials.
Williams has since been released from his duties in the department.
He has been detained in Lamar County Jail and bailed on Wednesday for $ 250,000, authorities said.
The sheriff's office said it would "pursue the maximum penalty under state law".
"The correctional officers take an oath to treat the inmates with dignity, respect and behavior as professionals," said a statement from the officials. "While no facility or its employees are 100% free from contraband or illegal activity, that remains the goal."
