Couple falsely accused of kidnap attempt sees ‘hope’ after California mom gets charged

A California mother was charged after falsely accusing a couple of kidnapping their children, according to Sonoma County prosecutors.
Sonoma's Katie Sorensen faces misdemeanor charges after falsely accusing a Latino couple of attempting to kidnap their two children at a Michaels craft store on Dec. 7 and speaking about the incident in two viral Instagram videos, reported Argus Courier.
Sadie and Eddie Martinez, parents of five children, learned of the allegations after Petaluma police released surveillance cameras about them.
"We are very happy with the news," Sadie Martinez said last week, according to the publication. "It's a beautiful step towards justice. It gives you hope."
In videos posted on Instagram, Sorensen said her "children are the targets of attempted abduction" and that she shared the story "to raise awareness."
Sorensen accused the couple of describing their children's "characteristics" and following her into the parking lot after she did not purchase anything from the store, KTVU reported. Sorensen said the man looked like he was about to pack her stroller and when she yelled for help the couple drove away.
"I've seen these people, they didn't look exactly clean," said Sorensen. "I felt uncomfortable around her, and instead of making her uncomfortable with my discomfort, I decided to stay with my discomfort."
Petaluma police said in December that they had cleared the Martinezes of wrongdoing after Sorensen reported the incident to authorities. The Martinezes denied the allegations to the police.
“So far the investigation has not produced any evidence or witnesses to confirm the account provided by the reporting party. The evidence gathered helped back up the couple's account from the store, "police said.
The Petaluma police chief said an investigation was opened on December 17 to determine whether the incident was falsely reported.
"Everyone is guilty of living in a bubble, their own little world. And I'm not sure what yours was made of, but it may have been disturbing or disturbing for them to see people who might not be dressed like them, had a different upbringing than her and had a darker skin tone, ”said Sadie Martinez, according to KGO.
