News came over the weekend that the UK would start rolling out the vaccine against AstraZeneca / Oxford University from Monday. With access to vaccines from BioNTech / Pfizer Inc. and AstraZeneca / Oxford University, the UK government plans to vaccinate 2 million people within the next two weeks.

In the UK, a total of 616,933 people are said to have received the vaccine between December 8 and 20. The government has ordered 40 million doses of the BioNTech / Pfizer Inc. vaccine and 100 million doses of AstraZeneca.
The news hit the wires after the Malaysian government's increased order. Last week the Malaysian government announced that it placed a 6.4 million dose order with AstraZeneca. In addition, the Malaysian government negotiated with China and Russia for more doses.
Malaysia is currently battling a third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. The identification of more virulent strains of the virus has resulted in governments increasing vaccination requests.
Combined with a 12.8 million dose order from BioNTech / Pfizer Inc., the government has received enough doses to vaccinate 40% of the Malaysian population.
The Malaysian government expects doses sufficient to vaccinate 83% of the population once vaccination orders are placed with China and Russia.
What's next?
If governments increase vaccine doses, economies are expected to reopen once the "most at risk" have been vaccinated.
In the EU, UK and US, this could be done before the end of January. Schedules remain key to predicting an economic recovery.
Markets will expect combined fiscal and monetary policy measures to fuel the economic recovery.
However, some nations will lag behind industrialized nations. Poor nations will have less access to COVID-19 vaccines while other nations were belatedly placing orders.
We can therefore expect a certain economic divergence, which affects not only the exchanges but also the respective currencies.
From a vaccine perspective, the game changer remains a single dose vaccine. To date, Johnson & Johnson is a leader in the delivery of a single dose vaccine. The results of clinical studies are expected to be available by the end of January. If the vaccine proves effective and safe, Johnson & Johnson would submit an EEA to the FDA in February. According to the Johnson & Johnson website, filings with other health authorities would be parallel.
