Cowboys are signing Garrett Gilbert off Browns’ practice squad
The Cowboys needed another quarterback after losing starter Dak Prescott to an ankle injury at the end of the season.
Veteran Andy Dalton becomes the starter, with Ben DiNucci from the seventh round as a backup.
"There are just a few things you do from second place in the league," said Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy of DiNucci's new role. "So this is a big step, a great opportunity for Ben DiNucci."
The Cowboys sign Garrett Gilbert as the third quarterback on the Browns training team, reports Tom Pelissero of NFL Media.
Gilbert, who played at the University of Texas and SMU, has never started a game since joining the league as the Rams' sixth pick in 2014. He has played six games and played 2-of-6 for 40 yards.
He's also spent time with the patriots, lions, and robbers.
