It's been nearly three years since the last episode of Criminal Minds aired on CBS, and fans are itching to re-enter the world of their favorite BAU agents. Thankfully, Paramount+ has heard their pleas and a Criminal Minds reboot is officially here.
On November 24th, the first two episodes of Criminal Minds: Evolution land on the streamer and off we go. The official transcript line reveals that the FBI team "will face their biggest threat yet, an UnSub who has used the pandemic to create a network of other serial killers." When the world opens up again and the network goes live, the team must hunt them down, one kill at a time."

Additionally, familiar faces will return in the Criminal Minds reboot, including Joe Mantegna, A.J. Cook, Kirsten Vangsness, Aisha Tyler, Adam Rodriguez, and Paget Brewster. But people have also been asking if Matthew Gray Gubler will appear in the CBS revival since his character Dr. Spencer Reid continues to be a fan favorite.
Why is Matthew Gray Gubler aka Dr. Spencer Reid in Criminal Minds: Evolution not?
Viewers who tune in to Criminal Minds: Evolution may find that neither Dr. Spencer Reid and Agent Matt Simmons (Daniel Henney) are nowhere to be found. Although Matthew's character was central to the original show, which debuted in 2005, that didn't mean the actor was ready for a comeback.

As Deadline revealed in early February, Matthew won't be making a major return and will let Spencer down...for now. That said, just because he's not in the first two episodes doesn't mean his presence won't be felt in the reboot. Speaking to TVLine in September, showrunner Erica Messer opened up about the idea, including whether the other characters in the new spin-off will see little nuggets of the young genius.
"It's a bit of a mystery as to what Reid and Simmons are up to, but they're certainly not forgotten," she told the outlet. "DR. Reids and I think Matt Simmons' desks are still there, still have stuff on them."
The showrunner continued, "If any of you have returned to the office [after the pandemic], you still have stuff on your desk that was there for two years. So we're definitely playing that. But [Spencer and Matt] didn't walk away."

So Spencer will be featured in the Criminal Minds reboot — just not in the way fans were hoping. As for Matthew's opinions on the Criminal Minds reboot, that's unknown. Given how active he is on Instagram at the moment, it might just be a matter of time before he gives his two cents. But at least we know that Spencer lives on in the BAU...even if Matthew isn't a part of it.
