Cumbie returning to Texas Tech as offensive coordinator

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) - Former Texas Tech quarterback and assistant coach Sonny Cumbie is returning to the Red Raiders as the new offensive coordinator after seven seasons with Big 12 rivals TCU.
Cumbie's hiring was announced by sophomore tech coach Matt Wells on Monday night, a week after offensive coordinator David Yost was sacked after a 4-6 season.
Before joining TCU in 2014 as a co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks trainer, Cumbie was a full-time trainer for the Red Raiders for four seasons, from 2010 to 2012 as an indoor receiver trainer before becoming a co-OC and outdoor receiver trainer worked in the TCU in 2013.
"I'm very excited to be returning to Lubbock and Texas Tech," said Cumbie.
Cumbie was a former walk-in quarterback who threw for 4,742 yards and 32 touchdowns as a senior for the Red Raiders in 2004. He crowned this season by throwing a win over the then No. 1 for 520 yards and three touchdowns. 4 California in the Holiday Bowl as Tech finished 8-4.
"When we went out to look last week, we wanted to hire one of the best offensive coaches in the country and we found that in Coach Cumbie," said Wells. "He is known as one of the best quarterback developers in the country and will directly affect our offense."
Cumbie returned to Texas Tech in 2009 as an assistant to Mike Leach. The following season he became a full-time assistant at Tommy Tuberville. He was then retained and promoted to Co-OC when Kliff became Kingsbury's head coach in 2013.
