Dan Rather Rips 'Abject Cruelty' Of Trump's 'Malignant Ego' As Jobless Benefits Expire
Veteran journalist Dan Rather scorched Donald Trump on Saturday night for his calloused indifference to the suffering of millions of Americans when the president resigned at his Palm Beach golf resort while much-needed unemployment benefits ran low for lack of his signature.
Trump refused to sign the COVID Relief and Spending Bill, which was deemed final prior to his short-term calls for major COVID relief reviews and complaints about unspecified "pork" spending. At least 9.5 million Americans have relied on the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance section of the package, which expired at midnight on Saturday.
More like tweeted that he was thinking of all the "desperate" people who asked for help. "Heartbreaking," he added. "The pathetic cruelty, the calluses, the lack of a single drop of empathy ... during the holidays and a pandemic ... all without a purpose but with an evil ego," he added, referring to the president.
President-elect Joe Biden has criticized Trump's refusal to sign the stimulus package as a "abdication of responsibility" with "devastating consequences".
Trump didn't even acknowledge the expiration of critically important unemployment benefits as he angrily tweeted late Saturday night about the presidential election, which he repeatedly falsely claimed to have won.
The unemployment package would have greatly improved benefits for Americans badly hit in the job market and would have struggled to cover food and housing costs in the face of a devastating pandemic.
Others were as stunned as Eher that the vital help could simply fall by the wayside.
