'Dancing With the Stars' season 29 recap: Weir makes magic in the ballroom, Jesse Metcalfe sent home

"Dancing With the Stars" went into the 80s Monday night to celebrate the era that "Flashdance" and Madonna brought us. Despite recent efforts to break away from the crowd for good, actor Jesse Metcalfe was sent home.
With the competition narrowing, Metcalfe put his best foot forward during his tango on Everyone Wants To Rule The World by Tears For Fears. While the actor improved significantly from last week, the audience felt that he was not advancing as fast as the other competitors and sent him to the bottom two places.
The decision to shorten alum's "Desperate Housewives" "DWTS" trip was a particularly difficult one for all three judges as the actor was just beginning to realize his potential. Compared to Vernon Davis, who was also in danger of being sent home, the judges felt that the Super Bowl champion had made better progress.
Many competitors prayed that Monday would be their breakout night, and that moment finally came for Olympic figure skater Johnny Weir, who, according to Judge Carrie Ann Inaba, crushed his contemporaries on "Total Eclipse of the Heart".
Weir's fluid and graceful routine, expertly choreographed by his dance partner Britt Stewart, dazzled on the ballroom floor thanks to an impromptu visit to an ice rink before the show. Stewart managed to show Weir the many similarities that the present shares with skating, which was reflected in absolute magic on the ballroom floor.
With 29 out of 30 points, Weir achieved the highest score of the season to date.
Two other notable routines came from "One Day at a Time" star Justina Machado and Jeannie Mai of "The Real," whose risky stunts were praised by the judges.

Machado's energetic and daring jazz routine to Michael Sembello's "Maniac" from the movie "Flashdance" literally ended in a shot in which the actress paid homage to the film's most famous scene.
Meanwhile, judges raved that Mai added a bathtub to her playful jazz routine in Madonna's "Like a Virgin," which sealed her place as the season's most entertaining competitor.
As for the liveliest moment of the night? Aside from Machado recreating the "Flashdance" water scene, it was Davis who wore a full head of hair for his tango to Bon Jovi's "Livin 'on a Prayer," which led Judge Derek Hough to notice that the NFL -Star looked like the child of Earth, Wind and Fire, Steven Tyler and Lenny Kravitz.
"Dancing With the Stars" returns next Monday - as does Derek Hough for the first time in years - on October 19th at 8pm. ET on ABC.
