David Harbour may have confirmed this dark Stranger Things Season 4 fan theory
Warning: This post contains spoilers for Stranger Things Season 3.
When we all first heard that Hopper was going to return to Stranger Things Season 4, we were thrilled to know that our lovable, huggable, strict, yet soft father figure would return to us. So many of us thought we saw the last of him in Season 3 of Stranger Things. (Dude was vaporized during the closing of the upside down, do you remember?) But the teaser trailer reminded us that an unforgettable and seriously dark ish has gone down in Hawkins to this point, and the hopper we once knew and loved one, may not be the same hopper anymore.
"For me, what's happening this season ... we're seeing some of Hopper's really deep background stories that we indicated with the boxes in Season 2," teased David Harbor, who plays Hopper, during a virtual deadline event. He appeared alongside the Duffer Brothers (Matt and Ross), who explained that they approach each season of Stranger Things as if it were a separate film.
The Stranger Things star is referring to something that he hinted at in May: Hopper's boxes, which we only saw in season 2, could play into it. In his cabin basement you can see boxes labeled "Dad", "Vietnam" and "New York".
Harbor continued, "I'm very happy that people can see these really deep colors in [Hopper]."
In the new season, Harbor said, Hopper is "rather painted in a darker palette" and will express deeper emotions that have been hidden under his "craziness" from the start.

"Dark Palette" only seems to confirm that Hopper went through hell in the Russian labor camp he was in after sacrificing himself to save Hawkins from the Mind Flayer. And what would Hopper do “dark” if not for the Russian brainwashing theorized on both Reddit and Twitter after the February teaser was released on social media? Brainwashing would essentially make Hopper Season 4 villain.
Wouldn't it be tragic if Hopper survived his vaporization just to not remember the ones he saved? Wouldn't it be terrible if he turned against Joyce, Elf, Mike, Will, Lucas and Dustin after the gang had gone through hell to save him from his dark thoughts of an even darker past - the bad guys would be his definitely use deceased daughter Sara as brainwashing ammo, right?
What if the funnel was brainwashed and he doesn't even remember Hawkins now, and who he was when el and the others find him doesn't recognize them

Stranger Things Season 4 will be an emotional jerk when it hits Netflix (which is still unclear due to the coronavirus pandemic). That's for sure. Something tells us that when Hopper goes dark, the Starcourt Mall team for comic relief tags - Steve, Robin, Dustin and Erica, preferably in Scoop's Ahoy uniforms - will need us more than ever.
