Deadly shooting at water park followed an escalating ‘altercation,’ Tennessee cops say

One woman is dead and another injured after gunshots broke out outside a Tennessee water park over the weekend, officials said.
The shooting followed an escalating "altercation" at Soaky Mountain Waterpark in Sevierville, a preliminary police investigation revealed. The 50-acre tourist attraction is close to Gatlinburg and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
At around 8 p.m. Saturday, Sevierville police said they had received a call about gunfire being fired in the Soaky Mountain parking lot. There they found two women who were shot and identified as Kelsy Cook, 24, and Angie Russell, 23.
Cook was taken by air to a Knoxville hospital where she was pronounced dead, officials said.
Russell was rushed to hospital with a non-life threatening injury. According to police, both women were from Loudon, a town about 35 miles southwest of Knoxville.
"The Soaky Mountain management team is committed to the safety of our guests and we are deeply saddened by the events that happened in our parking lot on Saturday night after our water park closed," said General Manager Dave Andrews, according to WATE. “The Sevierville Police Department is overseeing this investigation and we are working with them fully. Since it is an active investigation, we cannot comment on it. "
After responding to the shooting, officials said they stopped a car with two possible suspects inside.
Sarah Romine, 31, from Knoxville, has been charged with second degree murder, aggravated assault and "possession of a gun while drunk," police said. Joshua Dannels (30) from Crossville is also facing the latter charge.
The two were reportedly arrested and taken to Sevier County Jail.
Police did not share lawyer information for Romine or Dannels in a Facebook post. A water park representative did not immediately respond to McClatchy News' request for comment on Monday.
