For some, Cruel Intentions is a guilty teen drama; It was an important revelation for Demi Lovato.
In a discussion with Queer Eye's Tan France on National Coming Out Day 2020, Lovato revealed that she first knew she was queer after seeing the famous makeup scene between Selma Blair and Sarah Michelle Gellar in the 1999 film had seen.
"It was definitely when I was young and I shouldn't have seen Cruel Intentions, but I did and it was that scene where they made out on the park lawn," said the singer. "I was just like, 'Oh wait - I really like this, I want to try. "
"And then when I was 17 I finished with it," she continued. "And then I knew."
Lovato has described her sexuality as "very fluid" and identifies as strange. (She recently broke up with her fiancé Max Ehrich after a two-month engagement.) She went further into her "phases" when she came to France, noting that she told her friends about it when she was 17.
"I pretty much told all of my friends and my older sister when I was 17," Lovato said. “They all knew before I took it to my parents and then to the public. Those were my three phases: friends, parents, public. "
"There were times when I wrote songs about girls that my fans thought I wrote about men," she added. "I'm surprised some of them didn't find out that some of the songs were for certain people. I shared it with the world, and yet I wasn't quite clear what I was talking about. Music was my safe space."
Lovato released her latest single "Still Have Me" last month after breaking up with Ehrich.
