Demi Lovato Slams Frozen Yogurt Shop For 'Triggering' Products, Critics Push Back
Demi Lovato started a social media war with a popular frozen yogurt shop over the weekend that caused a lot of people to call them about abusing their huge platform.
The pop star took on The Bigg Chill in Los Angeles and slammed the store on her Instagram page for offering sugar-free options. Lovato said seeing the products was "triggering and terrible" for her as she was recovering from an eating disorder.
“It's extremely difficult to order Froyo from @thebiggchillofficial when you have to walk past tons of sugar free cookies / other diet foods before you get to the counter. Please do better, ”she wrote in an Instagram story. Your Instagram account has millions of followers.
She added the hashtag #dietculturevultures using "harmful messages from brands or [companies] that uphold a society that not only enables, but praises, disordered eating."
The Bigg Chill, which had just over 6,000 followers on Instagram on Sunday, thwarted Lovato's criticism by stating in an Instagram story that the shop had products for customers with diabetes and celiac disease, options for vegans and "lots of pampering items" offers. ”
Bigg Chill's account also replied to Lovato via Instagram direct message. This resulted in a screenshot posted by the singer on her website: “We are not dieters. We have been responding to all of our customers' needs for 36 years. We're sorry you found this offensive. "
Lovato went on to message the brand and post their responses on their account.
"You can wear things for other people and at the same time take care of a different percentage of your customers who are having trouble EVERYDAY just getting one foot into your business," she wrote. “You can find a way to provide a welcoming environment for everyone with different needs. Including eating disorders - one of the deadliest mental illnesses that only occurs after an overdose of [opioids]. Don't make excuses, just do better. "

She also suggested the brand make it clear that certain products are intended for customers with dietary restrictions.
"When it's not very clear, the messaging gets confusing and in LA it's really difficult to differentiate between diet culture and health needs," she said. "I think clearer messaging would be better for everyone."

The Bigg Chill told HuffPost in a statement that it "was really hurt by Demi's comments".
"For the past 36 years, our small, female-owned business has looked after everyone who walks through the door. Whether diabetic, vegan, gluten-free, or just a decadent dessert - we've always tried to have something for everyone," said the company.
Lovato did not respond to a request for comment.
Lots of people on social media have reached out to discuss Lovato looking for a popular frozen yogurt shop, including Leah Sweeney, who said in a video that Lovato should be "ashamed" for using her massif Platform to "pull" the shop.
