Utah Senator Mike Lee has been criticized on Twitter for a number of recent tweets on democracy, suggesting that this is not the goal in and of itself.
"Democracy is not the goal; freedom, peace and prosperity are. We want the human condition to flourish. A democracy of rank can prevent that," Lee wrote in a late-night tweet from Utah on Thursday at 12:24 pm local time.
The tweet was the subject of numerous ridiculous acts, both for its message and its spelling mistakes.
"Prospefity is not possible while we are still dying of Covfefe," wrote Star Trek actor and liberal activist George Takei on Twitter.
Michigan Congressman Rashida Tlaib and former California Democratic Congressman Katie Hill have also reached out to Mr. Lee about his tweets.
“When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time,” wrote Ms. Tlaib, quoting Maya Angelou.
“Senator, we believe you. We see you undermine our democracy when Trump refuses to agree to a peaceful transfer of power. We will never let you steal that choice, ”she added.
As a former US attorney and Supreme Court Clerk, Samuel Alito Jr., Mr. Lee has long credited himself as an expert on US constitutional law and a narrow reading of the authoritative document as a guide to his political ideology and voting patterns in public life used.
Earlier on Wednesday night, Mr. Lee pushed back the widely accepted notion that the US is a democracy broadly defined as any system of government in which the people governed have the authority to write their own laws and statutes. either themselves or through selected representatives.
Most legal scholars claim that the US is a representative democracy.
Of course, like Mr. Lee, some people disagree on semantics.
"We are not a democracy," he wrote on Twitter on Wednesday.
He had explained his views in a previous tweet:
“The word 'democracy' does not appear anywhere in the constitution, perhaps because our form of government is not democracy. It is a constitutional republic. It is important to me. It should matter to anyone who is concerned about the excessive accumulation of power in the hands of the few, ”wrote the Utah Senator.
Mr. Lee is one of three Republican Senators battling a Covid-19 diagnosis. Experts believe he signed a contract last month at an introductory event for Supreme Court candidate Amy Coney Barrett in the Rose Garden of the White House.
Few wore masks in pictures of senators and administrators cheering in the Oval Office before and after the event.
Mr. Lee insisted that he and others tested negative after the event.
The virus can have an incubation period of up to two weeks before presenting itself to someone for a test positive. Because of this, since March, scientists and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have been advising people to wear masks when in close proximity to one another.
