Democratic newcomer Wes Moore has a 32 percentage point lead over his challenger, the Republican state of Del, in the Maryland gubernatorial race, according to a newly released Washington Post-University of Maryland poll. Dan Cox.
The poll found Moore has a 60% to 28% lead over Cox; nine percent of respondents were undecided.
The results showed that 86% of Democrats backed Moore, while only 3% swayed to support Cox.
However, Cox garnered a lower proportion of support among Republicans (71%) -- not nearly enough for a GOP candidate to even remotely win in the solid Democratic state. Moore, on the other hand, is supported by 22% of Republicans.
Moore's crossover support with the Republicans is similar to supporting two-year GOP Gov. Larry Hogan under a sizable bloc of Democrats, which allowed the governor to win most other statewide races in 2014 and 2018 despite Democratic strength.
Each candidate received the support of 38% of independents. However, both candidates still have time to convince this block of voters, with 16% saying they are undecided.
Moore, an author and former nonprofit executive, won his party's nomination in a hard-fought July Democratic primary by focusing on economic issues around the kitchen table and championing issues such as education reform, the environment and improvements in public safety offered .
If elected, Moore would become Maryland's first black governor.
Cox, a Frederick County GOP state legislator who entered the race primarily because of the state's COVID-19 pandemic restrictions, is being endorsed by former President Donald Trump.
The Washington Post-University of Maryland polled 810 registered voters Sept. 22-27; The poll had an error rate of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
