Background:
At the end of July it became known that Major General of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Dmytro Marchenko, who led the defense of Mykolaiv until April, had returned to the Mykolaiv region to conduct some operations.
On the afternoon of August 9, explosions rocked the military airfield at Novofedorivka in Russian-occupied Crimea. Local residents posted videos on social media showing at least two fires and commented that they heard between 7 and 12 explosions.
The Russian Defense Ministry claimed that the fire at Saky airfield was the result of some aircraft munitions detonating. Later, a source from the Russian Defense Ministry informed TACC that the explosions were caused by a "fire safety breach" at the military airfield near Novofedorivka.
The Defense Ministry of Ukraine said it did not know what caused the explosions in Novofedorivka.
The New York Times quoted a "senior Ukrainian military official with knowledge of the situation" as saying that Ukrainian forces were behind the blast at the airbase.
Mykhailo Podoliak, senior adviser to the Ukrainian president, said Kyiv was not involved in the explosions at the Novofedorivka airfield in Russian-held Crimea.
On the morning of August 10, the General Staff reported that on August 9 Russia lost 160 servicemen, nine aircraft and 15 tanks.
