Detroit Red Wings address goaltending hole by signing Thomas Greiss

Steve Yzerman addressed the greatest need for Detroit Red Wings by signing goalkeeper Thomas Greiss on Saturday.
Jimmy Howard's struggles last season left the Wings in need of someone to stabilize things on the net, and the answer was found in a $ 7.2 million two-year deal with Greiss. The German netminder last played for the New York Islanders and has almost 300 NHL games on his résumé.
The 34-year-old Greiss has achieved a savings percentage of over 900 in nine of his last ten seasons. In 282 games that were split between the San Jose Sharks (which Greiss drafted 94th place in 2004), the Phoenix Coyotes, the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Islanders, Greiss has an average of 2.63 goals and a savings of 0.915 percent.

The Wings had to find a proven NHL goalkeeper after splitting up with Howard, who only won two games in 2019-20. Howard achieved a GAA of 4.20 and a saving of 0.882 percent in 27 appearances.
Greiss will join Jonathan Bernier as the Wings' two NHL-proven goalkeepers.
On Friday, Yzerman signed forward Bobby Ryan for one year, $ 1 million and defenseman Jon Merrill for one year, $ 925,000.
