Devils put goaltender Cory Schneier on unconditional waivers

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - The New Jersey Devils have put veteran goalkeeper Cory Schneider on unconditional waivers to buy up the last two years of his deal.
The Devils announced the move on Thursday, a day before the free agency's NHL period began.
The 34-year-old tailor has two years left on the seven-year contract worth $ 42 million. He was to receive $ 6 million annually for the past two seasons. The buyout is $ 8 million over four years.
The buyout makes up two thirds of the total amount of the contract and is spread over twice the remaining contract duration.
Schneider, who underwent hip surgery after the Devils playoffs in 2017/18, has had problems for the past two years.
The native Massachusetts American posted a 3-6-2 record with a shutout during the COVID-19-shortened regular season. Part of it he spent because of poor play in Binghamton the AHL. In the season following his surgery, he played only 26 NHL games.
The Devils will likely need to take advantage of the free agent market or enter into a trade to find a backup for Mackenzie Blackwood. The 23-year-old established himself as the team's # 1 goalkeeper last season, setting a 22-14-8 record with 2.77 goals against average and three failures.
The Devils acquired Schneider in June 2013 as part of a draft day deal from Vancouver. Schneider shared the goalkeeping duties of his first season in New Jersey with Hall of Famer Martin Brodeur. He took over # 1 the following year, eventually leading New Jersey back into the postseason with Taylor Hall in 2017/18.
Keith Kinkaid played well in 2018 and was the Devils' best goalkeeper in the playoffs. Schneider, who also suffered from a groin injury, took over and played well in the last three games in an opening round against Tampa Bay.
Schneider has a record of 170-159-58 with 2.43 goals against the average of his career. His best season was 2015/16 when he set a 27-25-6 record with 2.15 GAA and four shutouts on a very poor New Jersey team.
Schneider was one of the most popular devils of the ice cream and a leader in the locker room.
