Health Benefits of Pumpkin Pie
Best explains that pumpkin pie is "probably the healthiest pie on the Thanksgiving dessert menu" and is also "the easiest to make healthier" with just a few tweaks. Pumpkin, she says, is a "nutrient-dense food that provides only 50 calories per cup." It's high in carotenoids, phytonutrients that give squashes their bright colors, which act as antioxidants in the body. "Antioxidants have wide-ranging health benefits, as they prevent disease, reduce inflammation, and potentially even prevent cancer," she continues.
Gray agrees, adding that the pie she would consider the "healthiest" option for a Thanksgiving dessert is also pumpkin pie. "This classic dessert is the lowest calorie pie compared to apple, pecan, chocolate and more," she points out. "A slice of pumpkin pie is about 300 calories, which is 100 to 200 calories fewer than the alternatives," says Gray. Additionally, she notes that pumpkin pie is packed with vitamin A, which helps support healthy skin and nails. "It's also high in fiber, which helps regulate the body's use of sugar," Gray continues, "thus helping to keep the body's hunger and blood sugar levels in check."
Quick tips to make your cake even healthier
While pumpkin pie is probably the best Thanksgiving choice compared to others, Best still shares something to keep in mind when preparing your pie for even more health benefits. "To make it healthier, look for a recipe that replaces refined sugar with maple syrup, cow's milk with nut-based milk, and a pie crust made with whole wheat flour or almond flour," advises Best. Gray adds that many believe that "the crust of the "The pie is the unhealthiest part of the pie," so "avoiding the crust is extremely weight-loss" when you're looking for ways to cut out unnecessary calories. Happy Thanksgiving and Cake Eating!
