Disturbing Bystander Video Shows Cops Stand By as Dog Mauls Black Man

A Missouri Police Department had to explain their actions after cell phone footage showed three police officers apparently allowed their police dog to bite a black man while he was being arrested.
Police allege that the man suspected of breaking into a store failed to do so, but footage of the bystanders appears to show otherwise.
The video shows two officers arresting the man while he is bending over the hood of a car. Another officer stands in front of the car with a barking dog. The man doesn't seem to oppose the arrest, but the K9 is still being let loose on him as the other two cops leave. The dog continues to bark as it nibbles on the ankles of the man, who screams and grabs his legs. You can hear the man screaming "Help", but the three policemen are standing by and allow the dog to attack them further. Two policemen then push the man to the ground, and the dog starts pulling and tugging on his leg. Eventually the third policeman pulls the dog away only to let go of the suspect again. The dog bites and pulls the man to the ground. The three policemen stand by and watch the whole time. Eventually the dog is taken away and the man continues to be arrested.
St. Louis Post-Dispatch editors said the incident was a reminder of how black protesters were treated in Alabama in the 1960s as they marched for equal rights.
"This incident bears all the hallmarks of police officers who choose to enact their personal form of street justice - inflicting pain and punishment on the spot rather than waiting for the courts to do their job," the board wrote.
Even Michael Gould, a canine expert who specializes in police dog tactics, was concerned about the incident.
“The fact is, it's a human reflex response,” he said. “You can't have an 80 pound dog that punctures your skin and is resilient. It is practically impossible. "
In a press release on their Facebook page, Woodson Terrace police said they had been called on September 20 after reports of a man in a Woodson Terrace store were reported. They alleged the man refused to leave the police force, threatened to murder the responding officers, and claimed he was a sovereign citizen. They said they warned the man - who they thought was doing drugs - that if he didn't do it, they would use a dog.
"The officers tried to get the subject to cooperate, but the subject continued to resist," the press release said. “The test person was then warned several times that the K9 would be released if he did not adhere to it. The subject continued to resist and inflict minor injuries to one of the officers, allowing the K9 to be released and the K9 to take control of the suspect's foot. The suspect went down and the K9 was pulled off the subject. "
According to the police, after the dog was removed, the man tried repeatedly to resist the arrest, so the dog was released and bit his leg. He was taken to hospital because of his injuries.
“After the person was arrested, the officers found the person to be suspected of methamphetamine, which would explain why the officers were unable to hold the person back. The issue was cleared pending the filing of arrest warrants, ”the press release concludes.
Police in this state still refuse to explain why they kill people
Despite the police sticking to the protocol they used, there have been a number of angry reactions online.
"That's disgusting," one person commented on the Woodson Terrace Police Press release. “First of all, the video shows that a Fuqqin dog does not have to be used to attack this man. Second, the video certainly doesn't show him trying to harm one of your officers. Here too you show your Achilles heel; You have not taken the time to train YOUR officials on how to detain and protect someone who is under the influence. The answer is not a fuqqin [sic] dog. "
“So we all didn't see what we saw in the video back then? That is a clear lie !!!! " wrote someone else. “There were 3 cops and he was against the hood when he let go of the dog for the first time. Then he was lying on the ground when they let go of the dog again! With the police who nailed him. "
Another person wrote, “A deliberate dog attack? WTF! That's why the number of people who hate police officers is growing. "
However, some people who watched the video said it was comforting.
"I am so glad that all officers involved and the police dog were safe in this incident," commented one person on the police Facebook statement. "The report highlights the dangerous circumstances our officials face every day to protect us and our community."
