The Dodgers line-up will look slightly different for Game 1 of the National League Championship Series.
With left-hander Max Fried on the hill of the Atlanta Braves, Kiké Hernández, who has a track record against left-handers, will make his first start into the postseason. Hernández will start at the second base. Chris Taylor, the Dodgers' second baseman for their first five playoff games, will move to left field. AJ Pollock changes from left field to designated batsman.
Hernández has appeared in each of the Dodgers' five playoff games, but as a pinch hitter or late defensive substitute. He's 0 for 5 with three swings and one pitch hit in six record appearances. Hernández is one on three against Fried. He fought 0.673 OPS in 50 record appearances against left-handed versus 0.217 during the regular season, but has a 0.820 career OPS against left-handed.
Edwin Ríos started as a designated batsman for the Dodgers when they encountered a left-handed starting mug the other time in Game 1 of the Wildcard Series - the Brent Suter of the Milwaukee Brewers. However, Ríos will limit himself to starting the series as he continues to suffer from a groin injury that has forced him to suspend the NL Division Series.
Hernández will face eighth place between Pollock and Taylor against Fried, who emerged as an NL Cy Young Award contender during the season but had an uneven postseason. The Studio City graduate Harvard-Westlake threw seven goalless innings against the Cincinnati Reds in the wildcard series. The Miami Marlins scored four runs in four innings ahead of him in the NLDS.
Walker Buehler starts across from Fried. Bühler started his postseason career with at least seven spikes in each of his eight starts, but hasn't thrown more than four innings in over a month because of a blister on his right index finger.
