DOJ Warns of Possible ‘Oncoming Storm’ in Report Detailing Dangers of Terrorist Use of Crypto

US Attorney General William P. Barr announced on Thursday the release of "Cryptocurrency: An Enforcement Framework," a roadmap for monitoring the cryptocurrency landscape.
The framework provides a comprehensive overview of the emerging threats and enforcement issues associated with the increasing proliferation and use of cryptocurrency, Barr said.
An 83-page document attached to the release contained three sections - Threat Summary, Law, and Future Strategies - to guide the DOJ's handling of the space.
The document was released two years after former Attorney General Jeff Sessions set up a Cyber-Digital Task Force to study the effects of technological advances.
"Despite its relatively short existence, this technology already plays a role in many of the major criminal and national security threats our country faces," said Sujit Raman, Assistant Attorney General, chairman of the Cyber-Digital Task Force who authored the report.
There are a number of cases in which the DOJ will exercise its authority over foreign actors, the report said, namely when "virtual asset transactions affect financial, data storage or other computer systems" when they use crypto to investigate illegal ones Goods into these to import the country and when they provide illegal services “to deceive or steal US citizens.
The report sounds almost apocalyptic at times: "The current use of cryptocurrency by terrorists could be the first raindrops of an emerging expanded-use storm that could challenge the ability of the United States and its allies to disrupt financial resources that terrorist organizations use would enable them to carry out their deadly missions more successfully or increase their influence.
