Speaking to the news publication, one of the sources said that no president wants a "bad" airport named after them.
Another source said Trump was looking for an explanation of what "paperwork" would take to rename a transportation hub.
A source told the Daily Beast that it was the first time he asked about an airport that was named in his honor in 2018.
There is now renewed interest in the project as Trump leaves office and likely ponders his legacy as president.
Judd Deere, Assistant Secretary of the White House, refused to confirm whether these talks had taken place. He told the Miami Herald that "we do not comment on private conversations".
Specific details as to which airport could be named after the president are currently not known. However, a top Florida Republican has a proposal.
Christian Ziegler, Vice Chairman of Florida's GOP, has considered the option of renaming Palm Beach International Airport to Trump International Airport.
"It would be the gateway to South Florida for the enthusiastic fans of the former president," Ziegler told the Sun Sentinel.
He cited the frequency with which Air Force One flew into the airport during Trump's presidency.
Ziegler also recommended that Trump build a presidential library near his Mar-a-Lago club.
This follows reports that other members of the Trump family, including Ivanka, are planning to move to Florida.
This wouldn't go down well with the president's neighbors, who are taking steps to prevent him and his family from moving permanently to his Palm Beach residence, according to the Washington Post.
Naming airports after former presidents is not uncommon. There is a Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport in Virginia. In New York, an airport is named after John F. Kennedy.
One of the latter airports is Bill and Hillary Clinton National Airport in Little Rock, Arkansas.
