Dozens of commuters get flat tires on California highway

Getting a flat tire is a real pain in the ass anytime, but a flat tire on the morning commute is a terrible start to the day. Many drivers found that out the hard way on a California freeway this week, causing a scene when dozens of cars stopped to change their tires.
The California Highway Patrol said 36 drivers had flat tires on the 405 freeway near Mulholland Drive in Los Angeles on Wednesday. The news video shows the drivers lined up one by one on the hard shoulder, with tow trucks helping.
Luckily, no injuries were reported on the busy track, but that's not true for dozens of tires. Police believe the flats were caused by a box of nails or other debris on the freeway and don't think there's any reason to suspect foul play.
The news video shows some people changing their tires right on the side of the road, but many new cars these days lack spare tires.

Although annoying, many flat tires caused by nails can be repaired with a quick patch at a tire shop. However, if one of those drivers picks up a nail on the tire's sidewall, a replacement is likely due.
