Drew Barrymore Gets Candid About Her Year and a Half Inside a "Psychiatric Ward" at 13

Drew Barrymore may have been a child star, but her La La Land childhood was far from glamorous.
In a recent interview with Howard Stern, the actress revealed new details about how her mother managed to place her in a "full psychiatric ward" for 18 months.
"I laughed at Malibu for 30 days," she recalled. "Malibu was the opposite of the experience I had. I was in a place called Van Eyes Psychiatric for a year and a half. And you couldn't play around there, and if you do you will either be thrown into a cushioned room or into a canvas frame bound and bound. "
The Charlie's Angels actress stated that her mother, Jaid Barrymore, accepted her into the facility because she was a ruthless child star with "too many resources". She admits, "I went to clubs and didn't go to school and stole my mom's car. You know, I was out of control. So sometimes it was so humorous and sometimes I was just so angry." I would go and then I would be thrown into that thing. "

The "thing" Drew is referring to is a padded room that she had to "cool down" in for hours, sometimes with her hands cuffed behind her back.
She admitted it was an extreme form of discipline, but over time she realized that it was what she needed. "I was wondering why that is. And I thought maybe you need the craziest form of structure because everything was so accessible and screwed up in your world that you might need something like this to start the rest of your life" she explained. "And that probably didn't come for about six to eight months. For the first six to eight months I was just so angry. I couldn't see clearly."
Looking back on the ordeal, Drew said she had a better understanding of her mother's decision to sign her.

"I think after 30 years of therapy and a lot of soul searching and having children myself, I've created a monster," she mused. And she didn't know what to do with the monster. "
Through those three decades of therapy, Drew learned to "forgive her for making this choice." The actress said, "She probably felt like she had nowhere to turn. And I'm sure she lived in a lot of guilt for years to create the monster, but then I think she lived in great pain which I wouldn't have either. " I don't talk to her for a long time. "
Their relationship is in a much better place now, and taught Drew a lot about the kind of mom she wants to be. She shared, "I said to my own daughter ... something came up and I said, I'm not your girlfriend. I'll never be your girlfriend; I'm your mother. And I had a mother who was a friend. and we won't do that. "

That being said, the talk show host says she doesn't hold anything against her mother. "I can't make her feel bad anymore. I'm sure she's already managed to have a daughter who wouldn't speak to her," says Drew. "I mean, the pain I went through as a result - I felt so guilty. When I refused my mom access to me, it felt like I was cutting off the source of life. It was harder than ever Definitely the worst pain I've ever known. "
At the same time that Drew was seeking emancipation from her mother, she also sobered up, but her relationship with food and alcohol changed when she divorced Will Kopelman in 2016. Drew told Howard that after their breakup she "definitely turned to drinking and eating" but did so to seek help when she realized she was "slowly dying inside."

Instead of getting treatment, the actress says she turned to loved ones and described: "Fortunately, I have really great friends who are real ass kickers and who are really honest with me - I've always chosen that no cops t group. ""
Some of these friends were featured on their talk show, with the exception of one person who surprisingly stopped their offering. According to Drew, she has a "really good old friend who wouldn't tell the time of day."
Howard suspected Lucy Liu to be with Hugh Grant, but it seems this is a secret Drew will be buried in.
