Elon Musk says the Cybertruck will cost $1 million if Tesla does this
The Tesla Semi and the Cybertruck are parked on the back burner.
Elon Musk announced during the company's second-quarter conference call that the Semi won't launch until 2022 and that the Cybertruck won't be built until the Model Y goes into production at the Texas factory where both it and the which are produced, collect in volume runs.
Musk said the production of the vehicles was facing various parts supply and engineering challenges, but the Model Y was a priority at the new plant. Tesla plans to incorporate its next-generation 4680 battery technology into the Texas-built Model Y, but has a "backup plan" that uses the packs currently used in the Model Ys made in California and China.
The Cybertruck and Semi are also designed for the 4680 battery, which is still in development, but the large vehicles are "heavy users of cell capacity" so they will only become economically viable with a steady supply. Musk said if Tesla started building the cybertruck in small numbers, the pickups could cost "$ 1 million apiece," so it will wait for things to be sorted out.
Tesla's goal is to have the first Cybertrucks delivered by the end of 2021 and is still promoting it as such. Musk didn't confirm the target is still standing, but added that the vehicle, which is currently listed with starting prices between $ 39,990 and $ 69,990, will be Tesla's "best product ever."
According to a crowdsourced record, Tesla already has over a million reservations for the radically styled cybertruck, which Musk admits could be the company's first "flop".
Along with the new battery, the Model Y and Cybertruck will be engineered to replace dozens of parts with large one-off castings made by the world's largest presses, and the processes to make them are also still being ironed out.
