Errol Spence Jr. vs. Manny Pacquiao: Algieri says ‘we could get upset’
Can Manny Pacquiao beat Errol Spence Jr. in his 147-pound unification bout on August 21? A man who faced both fighters believes so.
Chris Algieri lost a near-shutout decision to Pacquiao in 2014 and was stopped by Spence two years later in five rounds. Algieri went down nine times in these battles, six times against Pacquiao.
He believes the Filipino icon shouldn't be underestimated, even though he's now 42 and will be out of the ring for more than two years.
Pacquiao stunned many observers when he defeated Keith Thurman by split decision in July 2019 to win the WBA welterweight title.
"I never count Manny out," he said on the DAZN Boxing Show. “He's one of those guys. He's got the one-punch power, he's got that speed, and he's clumsy. He sets traps, his unusual rhythm. Its ability to change during a fight. Make the best adjustments.
“The guys who can adapt are the guys who break up with themselves. Manny does that as well as anyone, even at this advanced age. "
Algieri, a former 140-pound champion, believes Pacquiao is also capable of harming Spence. Pacquiao has knocked out for over 11 years.
"He has a punch, he has power," said Algieri. "If he can join Spence on these recordings, we might get upset."
