A "true hero" dog with a big smile who spent her life protecting a small penguin colony in Australia has died. Eudy, a Maremma sheepdog, was 12 years old.
She was the longest-serving guard dog on Middle Island, a small Australian island just off the coast of the town of Warrnambool. This is where the penguins live, but the colony's number had dropped to just 10 in 2006, according to ABC News. Fox attacks were the main culprit.
That year, the people nearby decided that protection was needed. The first Maremma Sheepdog to protect the penguins, Oddball, was even immortalized on canvas. Eudy began her duties as a guard dog in 2010 and spent 10 years watching over the penguins. The Middle Island Penguin Protection Project announced Tuesday that Eudy had died.

"Eudy and her sister Tula were the heart and soul of the project; they are the real heroes," Penguin Conservation Project coordinator Trish Corbett told ABC News, adding that there may be no colony without Eudy.
Corbett mentioned that Eudy had a "lovely smile" when she was on the island where her ashes are scattered. She passed her final moments with a full belly of fried chicken and a cool sea breeze on her face. She died of "an aggressive form of bone cancer," reported ABC.
With a heavy heart we say goodbye to beautiful Eudy. She protected Middle Island for 10 years. Eudy and her sister Tula were the heart and soul of the project. Eudy has touched the lives of people all over the world. Rest peaceful beautiful girl. ???

Warrnambool Mayor Vicki Jellie said Eudy did her job with "serenity".
"While it has received so much global attention, the project itself is being run by a small, dedicated team and I would like to extend my deepest condolences to all of those who have worked with Eudy over the years, who I know have made this loss will be felt immensely. ", she told ABC.
Shut up, Eudy.
