Wtf, universe - pimples on the bottom ?! As if dealing with breakouts on your face wasn't enough, you now have irritated red bumps popping up on your bum. Can i just live ?!
Of course, "buttne" isn't as obvious as a monster zit on your chin, but it can still make you feel very confident and you'd probably prefer to keep your bum free of pimples, especially when the bathing season is over. Here you will find all the expert tips for dealing with pimples on the buttocks - according to dermatologists.
Butt acne isn't actually acne.
If it makes you feel better, pimples on your buttocks aren't really pimples. Pimples occur when a pore becomes clogged with oil, dead skin cells, or bacteria. The bumps on your bum are actually folliculitis. Folliculitis is a skin condition that occurs when a hair follicle becomes inflamed or infected, causing a whitehead to develop around the follicle. Sounds really gross, but it's actually completely normal.
"Folliculitis is often the result of bacteria, yeast, or fungus that infect the hair follicle," says Dr. Rhonda Klein, MD, MPH, Dermatologist with the Connecticut Dermatology Group. "It appears as small flat bumps that may be itchy or irritated."
Jump in the shower right after your workout.
Ok, now that you know what is causing buttne, you need to know how to get rid of it. Consider jumping in the shower right after your workout. This can help wash out any bacteria that may be disrupting the hair follicle.
You may also want to use a body scrub in the shower to aid in exfoliating and removing dead skin.
You shouldn't try to pop them.
If you're tired of everyone telling you not to pop your pimples, I apologize in advance because that's exactly what I'm about to tell you. It's so tempting, I get it, but just assume that the no-burst rule applies to breakouts anywhere on your body. Sorry, not sorry.
Change your sweaty sportswear immediately.
Damp, sweaty fabrics can be a breeding ground for yeasts and bacteria (which is why you keep getting face mask acne), so be sure to put on dry clothes right after your workout. "Tight clothing can trap sweat and body fluids on the skin for long periods of time and cause chronic breakouts on the back," said Kachiu Lee, MD, assistant professor of dermatology at Brown University.
Make sure you also wipe down any equipment you use in the gym - especially anything you might touch, like the seat of a spinning wheel. "Yoga mats, exercise balls and community sports equipment can harbor bacteria if they are not cleaned between uses," says Dr. Lee.
Acne products CAN help.
Folliculitis usually goes away on its own, but it's kind of tough catching a cold when you have itchy bumps on your buttocks, you know? The good news is, even if bum pimples aren't real pimples, your favorite acne products (or body acne products) can still help. Dr. Klein recommends using a detergent that contains benzoyl peroxide - it kills the bacteria that can cause normal pimples and butt breakouts. If that doesn't help, make an appointment with a dermatologist and ask about a topical antibiotic.
If possible, wear loose-fitting clothing.
Consider this your official invitation to wear only sweatpants from now on (you are welcome). Skinny jeans, over-tight underwear, and even your beloved lululemon leggings can rub against your skin and irritate your follicles all day long, especially if your skin is already a little rough from shaving or waxing.
"Chronic rubbing from tight-fitting clothing can cause folliculitis," says Dr. Small. So go ahead and wear sweatpants because they are good for your health. (You may even want to go to command for a while if your skin has been rubbed incorrectly.)
