Ex-Raiders player, coach Art Shell reacts to Jon Gruden emails: 'He hurt a lot of people'

Pro Football Hall of Famer Art Shell, who has been part of the Raiders franchise as a former player and coach for decades, has commented on the scathing emails from former Raiders coach Jon Gruden.
"It's disappointing to have someone able to do that," said The Athletic's Shell Tashan Reed in response to Gruden's emails. "He hurt a lot of people. He hurt himself too."
Gruden, whose emails from 2011 to 2018 contained homophobic, misogynistic and racist comments, resigned on Monday.
The emails were uncovered by the league as part of an investigation into the Washington Football team and reported by the New York Times, including the use of a homophobic slur describing league commissioner Roger Goodell and denouncing the hiring of female officials.
Art Shell trained the Raiders in Los Angeles from 1989-94 and again in Oakland in 2006.
The Wall Street Journal reporter that Gruden used a racist trope to describe the executive director of the NFL Players Association, DeMaurice Smith.
"I mean, I think everyone is shocked," Shell continued. "I was in shock. I said, 'What?' I couldn't believe it. And it's an unfortunate thing. But you have to live with the consequences you are doing. He would pay a price. He has already paid it. He will pay more. "
REACTION: DeMaurice Smith talks Jon Gruden, racism in the NFL and more
OPINION: Jon Gruden's emails aren't just an NFL problem. They are a symbol of the social white grudge.
The Raiders were the first team in the modern NFL to hire a black head coach in 1989 - Shell - and the first team to hire a woman as chief executive in 1997 - Amy Trask. Carl Nassib, a defensive end of the Raiders, was also the first active player in league history to come out gay.
"It's just unfortunate that in today's world such thoughts are out there," said Shell. "You'd like to think the world is changing. But for some it's not. And to publish it like that? Wow. That was just amazing to me."
