Fashion company behind Ocasio-Cortez's 'Tax the Rich' dress has history of not paying taxes: report

The company behind Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's "Tax the Rich" dress has a history of not paying its taxes, a Saturday report said.
Designer Aurora James', Brother Vellies' firm, has filed three open tax orders in New York for failing to withhold nearly $ 15,000 in income taxes from employees' paychecks, the New York Post reported.
James designed the highly acclaimed Tax the Rich dress for AOC, which the dress wore to the 2021 Met Gala. The event began on September 13th and was attended by celebrities, actors and politicians.
The debts were taken out before the pandemic and were in 2018 and 2019. The company has been charged with a total of 15 arrest warrants since 2015. In addition, from April 2018 to April 2019, the Internal Revenue Service placed six federal liens on the company totaling $ 103,220. with particular reference to the company's failure to pay employee wage taxes.
"Just because they take it off your paycheck doesn't mean they'll send it to the government," David Cenedella, a tax lecturer at Baruch College, told the point of sale. “That is certainly not something you want. I wouldn't say your average company has this. Something went wrong."
James also has a history of rental disputes. A previous landlord sued James in February 2018 for more than $ 5,000 in unpaid rent at the old address of their Manhattan store. Another landlord filed papers in August 2020 to evict Brother Vellies from its Brooklyn location, demanding more than $ 25,000 plus interest to remain beyond the end of the lease, which eventually settled the case, according to the Point of sale.
Brother Vellies did not immediately respond to the Washington Examiner's request for comment.
