HISTORY: Roger Federer saw his men win 20 individual Grand Slam titles against Rafa Nadal on Sunday, and the Swiss quickly congratulated the Spaniard.
Nadal defeated Serbia's number 1 in the world, Novak Djokovic, 6-0, 6-2, 7-5 to secure the 13th French Open title and compete against Federer for the first time in his career.
"I've always had the greatest respect for my friend Rafa as a person and as a champion," said Federer on Twitter, who already had four Grand Slam titles when Nadal won his first French Open title in 2005.
"As my biggest rival for many years, I believe we pushed each other to become better players.
"So it is a real honor for me to congratulate him on his 20th Grand Slam victory."
The 34-year-old Nadal only lost two games at the French Open and scored his 100th victory on Sunday.
"It is particularly amazing that he has won Roland Garros an incredible 13 times which is one of the greatest achievements in the sport." I also congratulate his team because nobody can do this alone. "
Federer turned 39 in August and missed the US and French Open while recovering from an injury. However, he has vowed to be back at the Australian Open next year.
"I hope 20 is just one more step on the way for both of us," said the Swiss.
"Well done Rafa, you deserve it."
Djokovic is third on the list with 17 Grand Slam titles.
