A FedEx representative told Insider the company has reassessed its policy of allowing employees not to have phones with them during work hours after a fatal shooting at one of its Indianapolis facilities on Thursday evening.
Details of the early Friday shooting continued to emerge, but the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department said at least eight people were killed. Officer Genae Cook said during a press conference Thursday evening that the shooter was believed to have died of suicide.
As news of the shootings spread, FedEx employees and their family members complained on Twitter that the company's policy not to allow employees to keep cell phones with them during work hours had questioned family members about theirs Relatives were safe.
Since most workers did not have cell phones at the time of the shooting, authorities asked the workers' relatives to gather at a nearby Holiday Inn to await further instructions.
Family members gathered there told IndyStar reporter Sarah Nelson that employees are not allowed to have phones with them while at work.
Heather Wilson, FedEx communications advisor, told Insider, "Our focus right now is on the safety and wellbeing of our team members and working with investigators."
The shooting took place at the FedEx ground facility at 8951 Mirabel Road near Indianapolis International Airport. According to RealityTrac, the facility is more than 328,000 square meters.
