John Lee Hancock's Los Angeles-based psychological thriller The Little Things (released January 29) stars Denzel Washington and Rami Malek as two cops investigating a murder and Jared Leto as the prime suspect.
"Well, it's all in the name - Albert Sparma!" Leto says of his character with a chuckle. "He's an unusual guy. He's an outsider, a black sheep, someone stuck in a part of life he may not deserve. He's been blessed and cursed with a considerable amount of intelligence and wit, but doesn't . " It fitted in really well with society. For me it was an opportunity to do a full transformation which I took full advantage of and which was great fun, the preparation, research and character building was just a blast. "
One of the main reasons the Dallas Buyers Club and Suicide Squad actor took on the role was because of the opportunity to work with Washington.
"Denzel Washington, for me he's my Brando, Pacino, De Niro rolled into one," says Leto. "I couldn't miss the opportunity to work with him. And on top of that, Rami, the icing on the cake, a force to be reckoned with and someone I was really excited to hang out with."
Hancock shot The Little Things in Los Angeles, albeit often in places that are off the tourist trail.
"LA is a full character in the film," says Leto. "It's rare to make movies in LA, so it was really great for me. We saw a side of LA that isn't lit up too often - the back alleys and the vacant lots - and that was fascinating."
The cast of The Little Things also includes Natalie Morales, Terry Kinney, Chris Bauer, Joris Jarsky, Isabel Arraiza and Michael Hyatt.
The Little Things will debut in theaters (wear a mask!) And on HBO Max on January 29th. See a first picture of Washington and Leto in the movie above.
