"What I would say to the older population: It will be reserved for you. Not everyone will make it on the first day, it will take time to make sure everyone has access," said DeSantis.
The CDC says people over 75 and key frontline workers should get the vaccine next.
"The vaccines are used where the risk is greatest, and that goes for our elderly population," DeSantis said. Florida has one of the largest populations in the country and one fifth are 65 years of age and older.
"We will not put young, healthy workers in front of our older, vulnerable population."
DeSantis, a Republican, has made his own rules since the pandemic began. Despite the CDC recommendation, he did not introduce a mask mandate.
Speaking at a press conference Tuesday, DeSantis said, "If you are a 22-year-old grocery worker in a supermarket, you would prefer a 74-year-old grandmother." I don't think this is the direction we want to go. "

He added, “There is some confusion about who should be in line first - some say some of the younger workers - we want to be clear in Florida: we have to put our parents and grandparents first, and that's us will do. And we're going to work like hell to get the entire vaccine out to the elderly who want it. "
