Florida COVID update for Wednesday: 16,038 new cases, highest reported since January

Florida has reached a peak of COVID-19 cases that has not been seen since the January surge when the state reported 16,038 new cases to the federal government on Tuesday, the seventh straight day the state saw more than 12,000 new ones reported daily cases.
The last time Florida had so many new COVID cases was on January 7, when the state recorded 19,816 new cases, the highest number of COVID cases in a day.
Florida accounted for about 20 percent of the new COVID cases reported in the United States on Tuesday, according to data reported by Florida to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The state also reported 92 new deaths on Tuesday.
Florida's 7-day percent positivity rate climbed 17.21% on Monday, up from 16.79% on Sunday, the state reported to the federal agency.
The surge in cases is also coming from the CDC, which is requiring all states to report their daily case numbers to the federal agency, and Miami-Dade County has issued new guidelines on masks due to the rising delta variant strain of the virus.
On Tuesday, CDC director Rochelle Walensky said the agency recommended that in areas with "significant and high transmission" of the virus, fully vaccinated people in indoor public spaces, including schools, wear masks to prevent the spread of the highly contagious delta variant.
On Wednesday, Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava ordered masks in all of the county’s facilities, including libraries, leisure centers and entertainment venues owned by the county. She also urges companies to require face coverings indoors.
"The numbers are clear," said Levine Cava at a press conference. "We hope companies are doing the right thing."
Cumulatively, Florida has had at least 2,534,334 confirmed COVID cases and 38,840 deaths as of Tuesday, according to the CDC.
The US surgeon General Vivek Murthy spoke of the rising number of cases in Florida last week.
“What worries me most about Florida is the alarming increase in cases, the number of hospitalizations and the number of deaths. And it's powered by the Delta variant, ”Murthy said in an interview with McClatchy.
"The challenge we have in Florida and in way too many states is that we still don't have vaccination rates high enough, and in some pockets we even have pretty low vaccination rates," he said.
According to Florida weekly COVID reports, more than 12.2 million Floridians have received at least one dose of the vaccine.
But Jason Salemi, a USF researcher tracking Florida's COVID cases, estimates that 8 million people in Florida who are eligible for the vaccine have not been vaccinated.
Unvaccinated bags across North and Central Florida
Parts of central and northern Florida have lower vaccination rates than the rest of the state, according to the CDC map. In Liberty County, a small county in the panhandle, only 28.6 percent of the total population were vaccinated, according to the CDC.
Nationwide, 57 percent of the total Florida population had received at least one dose of the vaccine, the CDC said on Wednesday, which is the US average.
Florida switched from daily to weekly reports in early June. However, the CDC continues to report daily case numbers from the states on its COVID data tracker.
January was the worst month of the Florida pandemic, with daily case numbers routinely in excess of 10,000. This followed an increase last July when the number of daily cases also exceeded 10,000.
The second half of July 2021 marked the start of Florida's third COVID-19 surge.
