Florida says Ben & Jerry’s change ‘step in right direction’

Gov. Ron DeSantis and CFO Jimmy Patronis commended Ben & Jerry's parent company for a decision that will allow ice cream to be sold in Israel.
But that doesn't mean Florida will immediately reinvest or enter into deals with parent company Unilever and its subsidiaries.

Despite opposition from Ben & Jerry's, Unilever on Tuesday announced an agreement that will result in Avi Zinger, an Israeli manufacturer and distributor of the brand, independently selling ice cream under the product's Hebrew and Arabic names in Israel and the West Bank.
DeSantis said in a Twitter post that Unilever's move was "a step in the right direction," but he remained "disappointed that it has taken them a year to oppose a movement" calling for the boycott of Israel, divestments and the imposition of sanctions.

Last year, the State Board of Administration, which oversees Florida's pension funds and other investments, told Unilever it had been added to Florida's list of "investigated companies boycotting Israel" after Ben & Jerry's said, "It conflicts with ours." Values ​​for Ben & Jerry's. Jerry's ice cream is to be sold in the occupied Palestinian territories.”

State Board of Administration spokeswoman Emilie Oglesby said in an email on Friday: "At this time, it does not appear that the status of Unilever, which is on the list of 'screened companies boycotting Israel', will change ' of the state remains, change."

When the State Council took action last year, Florida had about $139 million in equity interests in Unilever and its subsidiaries.
"As we continue to review and learn more about this development, we will analyze it in the context of our legal guidance and act accordingly," Oglesby said in the email.
