Ford Bronco Sport takes a tumble down CO's Black Bear Pass
A Ford Bronco Sport rolled about 400 feet from the infamous Black Bear Pass near Telluride on Sunday morning, throwing out the driver and a dog (along with the Bronco Sport's engine) in the process. Both the driver and the dog were injured in the accident, but one passenger who got off apparently survived the ordeal unscathed.
According to The Durango Herald, the Bronco Sport was driven by an inexperienced driver visiting from abroad. The driver was trying to break off an incline in a series of one-way streets when, while turning, the vehicle lost grip on the rocky ground and rolled down the mountainside.
The pass is coveted for its spectacular views, but notorious for incidents like this one that often locks the pass down for long periods of time as the authorities rescue vehicles and in some cases victims (often pets). Typically, such incidents are the result of inexperience on the part of the driver or insufficient vehicle choice for the task at hand. In this case, the San Miguel Sheriff's Office says, it's a bit of both.
"The Black Bear Pass is an extremely dangerous road and should only be used by experienced off-road drivers in suitable vehicles," wrote the sheriff at the end of the Twitter thread above. "Legally, a 16-year-old who got his DL hours earlier can try to drive the pass in grandma's 80s sedan. That doesn't mean it's safe."
The Bronco Sport, which sits underneath the iconic Bronco 4x4, shares many of its basics with the Ford Escape. Even all-wheel drive models will struggle with tough off-road terrain. Authorities have also not yet confirmed whether the driver was wearing seat belts at the time of the incident, but determined that apparently she was not.
