Former football player charged in Iowa hoops star's assault

A former Iowa State University football player was arrested in May in connection with an attack on a University of Iowa basketball star.
Nicholas Kron, 29, of Nashville, Tennessee, has been assaulted and assaulted for allegedly assaulting Jordan Bohannon, a Hawkeye security guard, outside a bar in downtown Iowa City. Bohannon sustained a serious head injury. Kron turned himself in on Saturday, was detained at Johnson County Jail and released about 20 minutes later, a prison officer said.
Bohannon filed a lawsuit against Kron a few days earlier, claiming that the cyclone's former defensive end had attacked him "brutally, illegally and deliberately".
Bohannon and Kron were both at the DC bar in Iowa City on May 23, according to police records. After the bar closed, police said Kron and another person outside got into an argument. According to police, Kron went to Bohannon, turned him around and hit him three times in the back of the head, knocking him to the ground and cutting his head.
Police say Bohannon's friends escorted him away, but Bohannon was later taken to hospital for treatment for his head injury.
No lawyer for Kron is listed in the online court files. Bohannon's attorney did not immediately respond to phone and email messages.
An Iowa sports department spokesman declined to comment, saying the matter had nothing to do with the university.
In a statement shortly after the incident, Iowa basketball coach Fran McCaffery said Bohannon was attacked by a person he had not seen.
"We were made aware of the incident immediately," said McCaffery. “We are grateful that friends who were with Jordan at the time prevented the incident from escalating. His health is our number 1 concern. "
Bohannon announced in April that he would return to the Hawkeyes for his sixth season in 2021-22. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the NCAA granted winter sports athletes easier access to participation in 2020-21.
Bohannon is Iowa's career ladder in assists (639), 3-pointers (364), free throw percentage (0.887) and games played (143). In the career ranking, he ranks ninth with 1,638 points.
Bohannon led the Hawkeyes last season with 80 3-pointers and 135 assists, finishing third with 10.6 points per game.
Kron played 12 games in 2012, counting five tackles, two tackles for one loss and one sack. In 2013, he received the Academic All-Big 12 Second Team award, made 14 tackles, 1.5 lossed tackles, and two fumble recoveries.
