HISTORY: A video obtained by Reuters showed a large crowd of factory workers in the city of Zhengzhou crouching behind plastic shields and using poles to hit authorities, while footage from another video showed metal railings being thrown at men who were behind a fence stood.
The rare scenes of open dissent in China mark an escalation in unrest at the massive Zhengzhou factory, which has become a symbol of a dangerous buildup of frustration at the country's ultra-tight COVID rules, as well as the world's clumsy handling of the situation, the largest contract manufacturer.
The protests that began early Wednesday (November 23) were apparently triggered by a plan to delay bonus payments, many demonstrators said in live streams.
