The footage, released by Kaiser Permanente of southern California, shows vulnerable patients lined up on EMT stretchers outside a local hospital, apparently waiting to be admitted. It shows other potential patients waiting - again outside - under folding tents in wheelchairs while they are connected to oxygen tanks.
The video recalls horrific images seen in countries like Italy at the beginning of the pandemic when patients died in hospital corridors.
The images come from the inside and outside of Kaiser Permanente's Downey and Fontana medical centers and depict a stark reality that local health officials have been trying to communicate for weeks.
“If you're still shopping for loved ones or planning a holiday get-together this holiday season, then you miss the gravity of the situation affecting hospitals in Los Angeles County, California and this nation. Christina Ghaly, the district's health manager, said Monday. “In the hospitals, people are very sick. They die there. "
Kaiser Permanente, which operates 36 hospitals nationwide, announced Tuesday that it has exceeded 100% of its usual patient capacity.
Two days before Christmas, LA County is hit by the aftermath of Thanksgiving. In the 70 emergency hospitals in the region, only 57 beds are available in the intensive care unit. The district's health authorities anticipate 33 adult and 24 pediatric beds in the intensive care unit and anticipate 6,155 Covid-19 patients in regional hospitals. This number is expected to increase even further in the next few days. The nationwide ICU capacity was 1.2% availability.
A record of 145 LA residents was killed by Covid-19 on Wednesday.
In the video, Kaiser doctor Praven Acharya warns: “This increase goes beyond what anyone could have imagined. If people keep gathering for the upcoming vacation, we will cripple our hospital system. "
RN Hans Vega said, "I do all of this work here for your family, for your friends, for people you may know, and some people out there don't take it seriously. Feels like a slap in the face at times."
