From the Bidens with 'LOVE': U.S. first lady's jacket brings message of hope
CARBIS BAY, England (Reuters) - On her first trip abroad since her husband Joe became president, US First Lady Jill Biden had a simple message for the world on the back of her jacket: "LOVE".
"Well I think we're bringing love from America," said Biden of her black blazer with the word printed in large on the back.
"This is a global conference and we are trying to create unity around the world and I think there is a need now for people from all countries to feel a sense of unity and hope after this year of pandemic."
Joe Biden's first trip abroad took him to Great Britain for a three-day summit of G7 heads of state and government in Cornwall on England's south-western tip. Previously, the President met British Prime Minister Boris Johnson for talks on Thursday.
"I told the Prime Minister we had something in common: we both got married over our station," Biden told reporters after he and Jill met the British leader and his wife, Carrie, whom he married just last month.
Johnson replied jokingly, "I'm not going to contradict the president or anything else."
The G7 meeting runs from Friday to Sunday, after which the Bidens meet the British Queen Elizabeth for tea at Windsor Castle.
"Joe and I are both looking forward to meeting the queen," said the first lady. “This is an exciting part of the visit for us. We have been looking forward to it for weeks and now the time has finally come. "
After leaving Great Britain, the US President is traveling to a NATO summit and a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
"I think he's so well prepared. He studied for weeks and worked to this day," Jill Biden told reporters about her husband's preparations. "Joe loves foreign affairs. That's his strength."
When asked if he was ready to meet Putin, she said, "Oh my God. He's over-prepared."
Jill Biden isn't the first US president's wife to use a jacket to deliver a message. Donald Trump's wife Melania pulled on a coat that said, "I really don't care, right?" for a visit to a Texan animal shelter that housed migrant children in 2018.
