Gamine wins Acorn Stakes by 18 3/4 lengths in record time
NEW YORK (AP) Gamine won the $ 300,000 acorn stakes for 3-year-old filly with 18 3/4 lengths in Belmont on Saturday.
Gamine was trained by Hall of Famer Bob Baffert and ran a mile in 1: 32.55, the fastest in the race's 90-year history. Their time was just outside the success record set by Najran in 2003 of 1: 32.24. Gamine collected 50 qualification points for the Kentucky Oaks in Churchill Downs on September 4th.
Gamine is one of two horses trained by Baffert that tested positive for a banned substance at Oaklawn Park in Arkansas. There she won a race on May 2nd. In published reports, Gamine and Charlatan tested positive for lidocaine, a regulated anesthetic that is widely used in equine medicine.
It is classified as a class 2 drug by the Association of Racing Commissioners International. Use is punished with a 15 to 60 day penalty and a $ 500 to $ 1,000 fine for a first offense. Without mitigating circumstances, a horse would be disqualified and lose its wallet. The results of the B-sample tests have not been released by the Arkansas Racing Commission.
Under the Hall of Fame John Velazquez, Gamine won her debut and improved her career to 3-0. As a 3-5 favorite, she paid $ 3.40 to win. The win increased her career win to $ 234,000. Gamine was bought for $ 1.8 million.
"She did everything I wanted her to do," said Velazquez, whose fifth acorn victory tied Mike Smith most in the jockeys race. "She is a bit aggressive, but I let her relax around my back. When we reached the five-sixteenth pole, I let her run. The quarter bar opened so quickly that I had to look back. She is very nice and professional. I wish they were so easy. "
Pleasant Orb finished second, and Water White was another half length back in third place.
