Gerard Butler Sues for $10 Million in Profits From ‘Olympus Has Fallen’

Gerard Butler filed a lawsuit on Friday alleging that he was owed at least $ 10 million in back-end compensation for the 2013 action movie "Olympus Has Fallen."
Butler sued Nu Image / Millennium Films, alleging the producer underestimated domestic and international revenues by tens of millions of dollars and failed to report $ 8 million that went to its own executives.

The lawsuit comes a day after Scarlett Johansson filed a blockbuster compensation lawsuit against the Walt Disney Co. alleging that the simultaneous release of "Black Widow" on Disney Plus affected their box office attendance.
Butler's suit is a more traditional case of "Hollywood bookkeeping". Butler played Mike Banning, an intelligence agent who must save the president from hostage-takers.
The film grossed $ 170 million worldwide and spawned two successful sequels, "London Has Fallen" and "Angel Has Fallen," in which Butler repeated the role.
"The producers made tens of millions of dollars with 'Olympus' but refused to pay Butler a cent of the gross receipts and profits promised in the parties' agreement," the lawsuit said. “Butler refuses to tolerate misrepresentation and other wrongful conduct by the defendants. Butler worked with the defendants to create a very successful film franchise. He demands his fair share. "
According to the lawsuit, Butler's contract entitled him 10% of net income, plus 6% of domestic adjusted gross income over $ 70 million and 12% of foreign adjusted gross income over $ 35 million. His production company was also entitled to 5% of net income, and Butler was to receive certain bonuses for reaching the box office thresholds.
The lawsuit alleges that Butler received irregular bills from the producer and that Butler objected to the statements. According to the lawsuit, Butler hired a chartered accountant who found that domestic income was underestimated by $ 17.5 million and producer income by $ 12 million, including the $ 8 million that which went to the executives.
The lawsuit also alleges that producers deducted the full cost of overseas advertising from overseas revenues, even though overseas distributors paid half the cost. The lawsuit also alleges that Nu Image / Millennium instructed distributors to deduct certain expenses so that income was not adequately reported.
