German Shepherd Stolen Nearly 5 Years Ago Reunites with Her Family After She Is Found Alone

A dog is back with her family after being stolen from their Texas home nearly five years ago.
The German shepherd, named Sheba, reunited with her family in Baytown, Texas on Sunday, CBS Austin reported.
That day, Sheba's family anxiously awaited the plane carrying their beloved dog to land from the Texas Panhandle, even decorating the airport with a poster that read, "Welcome Home, Sheba."

Prior to this reunion, the family was last together in 2018. In January of this year, someone stole Sheba from the Malmstrom family's front yard. The family searched their neighborhoods near Houston and beyond in hopes of recovering the dogs, but never had any luck finding out who took the dog or where it ended up.
“I remember searching every day and night. It was really sad as we had to keep looking for her but we never found her," Anniston Malmstrom told CBS Austin, who was just 3 years old when Sheba was kidnapped.
All that changed on August 1, 2022, when animal control officer Jared Harper found Sheba in Borger, Texas, more than 600 miles from where the Malmstroms live. Harper scanned the dog, who he found roaming alone, for a microchip and found one with the Malmstrom family's contact information.
The city then partnered with Friends of Texas Panhandle Shelter Pets and Pilots N Paws to fly Sheba home and back to her family for free, CBS Austin reported.

At the reunion, Stephanie Malmstrom, the dog's owner, and her family were emotional. Sheba recognized her family after just minutes, CBS Austin reported.
“Your emotions are everywhere. They're so excited and I don't think my 8-year-old understands that when you're happy you can cry," Stephanie told CBS Austin.
Stephanie added that Sheba remembers all the commands the family taught her before her disappearance.
"Five years later, she still remembers her name and her German commands," Stephanie told ABC 13 after reconnecting with the dog.

What happened to Sheba during those years away from home leaves some pieces of the puzzle unclear.

"Whoever stole her dumped her in the Texas Panhandle within two weeks, and this family adopted her and kept her for four and a half years," Stephanie told ABC 13.
Now, back in her original home, Sheba is spending time reconnecting with her family, CBS Austin reported.
