Ghislaine Maxwell only discussed a divorce from her husband prior to her arrest to "protect" him from the "dire consequences" of public association with her, according to new court documents.
When Ms. Maxwell sought bail, prosecutors argued that the divorce talks undermined her claim that her marriage to technical CEO Scott Borgerson was a strong reason for her to stay in the U.S. for trial.

In a recent lawsuit, Ms. Maxwell's attorneys said, "Prior to her arrest, Ms. Maxwell and her spouse had discussed the idea of a divorce in order to create a distance between Ms. Maxwell and her spouse to protect him ... from the dire consequences to be associated with her. "
They argued that there was no reason later to pursue the idea of a divorce that "none of them even wanted" and that the US government had offered "nothing but unsupported innuendos".
They added that the proposal was "particularly persistent and disproved by the facts".

Borgerson, 44, has offered to provide more than $ 22 million in security and has written a letter to the judge calling Ms. Maxwell a "wonderful and loving person."
Ms. Maxwell, 58, who is a French and British national, pleaded guilty in no way of helping Jeffrey Epstein recruit and care for underage girls for sex in the 1990s.
Her lawyers tried to convince a judge that she would not pose a flight risk if released on bail.
