Gold medal hopeful Sandi Morris breaks pole, injures hip in Olympics pole vault qualifying
Rio silver medalist Sandi Morris was a favorite for gold in the pole vault this week.
But their Olympics ended heartbreakingly early on Monday, thanks in part to a literally bad break.
Morris was waiting with the rest of the athletes at Tokyo Olympic Stadium on Monday night when a rainstorm forced the action to be halted. When the storm subsided, she did a warm-up jump on the wet track before restarting the competition. Failing to clear the bar, she fell awkwardly onto the edge of the mat near the box where the vaulters place their sticks.
When she got up with her bar, it was broken at a 90-degree angle.

Her next attempt wasn't a warm up. It was an official achievement at the qualifying height of 4.55 meters. She did not make it. This time when she got up from the mat, she was in significant pain and held on to her hip.
Your last attempt failed. As she neared the bar, she dropped her bar and fended off the attempt before jumping onto the mat with apparent pain.

When she got up she had tears in her eyes, realizing that her Olympics were over. She had not exceeded the qualifying height of 4.55 meters.

After the event, USA Track and Field announced that they had indeed sustained a hip injury.
This ended her dream of Olympic gold in Tokyo disastrously for the athlete, who has been among the first two of five international pole vault championships since 2016.
