Gracie Gold qualifies for 2021 U.S. championships
Gracie Gold, two-time national champion and 2014 Olympic champion, has qualified for the 2021 US Figure Skating Championships, which will take place in Las Vegas from January 11 to 21.
The results of the US Figure Skating Championship Series 2021 were announced Tuesday morning, showing gold among the 18 women who will fight for the national title next month. She was the most notable skater of all disciplines who had not yet earned her place at the event that led to the final qualification. The event, held practically due to the pandemic, required the skaters to submit a supervised free skate on video which was judged by a jury.
Senior level events can be viewed on Peacock Premium if required. The junior events will be available the week of December 28th.
The 25-year-old Gold finished seventh in the 47-women field with a free skate score of 106.50. The top nine women qualified, led by Paige Rydbergs 114.69. Nine others had already said goodbye to their results at the US Figure Skating Championships 2020 or the International Selection Pool Points Challenge 2020.
Gold won the US title in 2014 and 2016 and finished fourth in three of the sport's major world championships: the 2014 Olympic Games, the 2015 World Championships and the 2016 World Championships. In the fall of 2017, she quit the sport because of an eating disorder, depression and anxiety get treated and went two seasons without completing a competition.
The bronze medalist of the 2014 Olympic team event returned last season with the aim of forming the Olympic team in 2022. At the US Championships in 2020, she finished 12th. This season, Gold was 14th out of 17 skaters in the virtual ISP Points Challenge and 12th out of 12 in Skate America.
"I didn't put any energy on the ice," said Gold at Skate America.
Las Vegas is Gold's seventh US senior championship. The women's field is highlighted by two-time defending champions Alysa Liu, 2020 Skate America gold medalist Mariah Bell, and 2018 US champion Bradie Tennell, who has finished in the top three for the past two seasons.
Eric Sjoberg, the 2020 US junior silver medalist, scored 159.03 points, winning the virtual qualification of the 19 men's skater. Emily Chan and Spencer Howe, who teamed up in 2019, were the first of the six pair teams with 105.94. An ice dance event did not take place due to the number of entries.
